WALDEN GROTESK
Typeface Design Project
The “Grotesques Sans” is the typeface that has its own characteristics. Therefore, in order to create this typeface by myself, the creator started from finding the inspiration and visual references that relate the most to this typeface. Akzidenz Grotesk, Bureau Grotesk, Monotype Grotesk and Franklin Grotesk are the reference fonts which appeared as the true characteristics of Grotesques Sans types. So, the creator intended to bring some of the unique characteristics of each visual reference in order to mix and match to create the new one which is the “Walden Grotesk”.
Challenge
The project “WALDEN” is the final project from the creator’s typeface design class. By that time, the professor will randomize the typeface and subclass for each individual. So, it means that we will never know it before and we need to design by ourselves in full process. The part that challenges the most is the type of typeface that the creator receives which is the “Grotesques Sans”. Since, normally the creator is much more familiar with serif typeface than sans serif typeface and this is the first time for every creator to create their own typeface too. Therefore, this project is quite challenging and under a lot of pressure.
Solution
Since this is the first time for the creator to create my own typeface and the quest that creator received, the “Grotesques Sans” is quite challenging a lot. Hence, the creator needs to do a lot of brainstorming and researching about the history along with all of the main characteristics of this type of typeface.

Fonts Used
WALDEN is typeface in the sans serif classification which was all created by the creator. This typeface is also inspired by the subclass of sans serif which is called “Grotesques Sans”. Grotesques Sans usually includes static forms that are based on ovals shape and do not appear significantly of high stroke contrast.
Hence, WALDEN which is inspired by this subclass will appear with many characteristics including bold, constant and giving the sense of power. Last but not least, if we carefully look in detail at the WALDEN typeface, it will not appear any disproportionate.

Adobe’s creative apps, Layout design, Design skills, Sketching and drawing, Typography, Creative thinking, Presentation skill, Storytelling, Time management and so on.
Production Details
The production details of this project begin by brainstorming, exploring, and researching visual references of Grotesques San typeface as much as possible. Then the creator sketches each letter or the punctuation on the paper before generating the real one on Adobe Illustration software.
